The New Lens Therapy Approach

We want to demystify the therapeutic process to help clients feel more informed and in charge of their mental health care.

Step 1: Consultation

You’ll meet with our therapist to determine if she would be a good fit for your needs, and for her to make sure that she can appropriately support you. If, through this consultation, both yourself and our therapist decide that New Lens could be helpful for you, together you’ll book a first session, and you will fill out intake and consent forms on your own, or with our therapist in your first session together.

Step 2: Assessment

For your first couple of sessions, your therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan through the discussion of your history, concerns, presenting issues, past mental health experiences, etc. These sessions may not feel helpful right away, but these discussions are necessary to develop treatment plans, goals and strategies.

Step 3: Treatment

Once the treatment plan has been established, regular therapy sessions begin. Your sessions will have some structure to ensure good usage of your time, while also being flexible enough to provide for days when you want help with a specific issue or conflict, or if you just need some space and time to process and understand your emotions.

Step 4: Maintenance

Therapy can be concise and entirely goal-focused, meaning that once you have met your goals, you can choose to be discharged and terminate sessions. Part of a therapist’s job is to work themselves out of a job; to help you work towards your goals in a way that allows you to generalize what’s talked about in therapy to your life outside the therapy space.

Therapy can also be longer term and ongoing, meaning that maybe you accomplish all of your goals but you still enjoy meeting with your therapist on an ongoing basis as new concerns arise, or as your life changes and evolves.

At New Lens Therapy, we honour both types of clients, those who are happy to terminate upon goal completion, and those who want to continue their therapeutic relationship through life’s ups and downs, to ensure they maintain their mental wellness. Clients can also always reach back out to us if circumstances change to resume or restart therapy.

Why a virtual practice? Offering virtual services aligns with our values.

At NLT we want to make therapy as accessible as possible. Research has shown that virtual therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy for most populations.

Offering virtual therapy services allows us to reach people who might otherwise be unable to access therapy. For people living in more rural settings where the closest therapy office is not 10 minutes away, and for people who live with chronic illnesses, chronic pain, or are immunocompromised, virtual therapy offers a convenient way to access mental health care.

Additionally, therapy can be difficult; talking about painful experiences and processing strong emotions can be upsetting. Having the ability to have these conversations from the comfort and privacy of your own home can increase your feelings of safety, which can allow for more fulsome discussions and better outcomes.
